Media: creating or reflecting reality

Media4change and NISI (National Institute for Social Integration) is launching a discussion on behalf of International Tolerance Day. It is called “Media in terms of stigmatized society groups: is it reflecting or creating reality”.

Various media monitorings show that there are a lot of negative depiction of vulnerable groups in our society. There are hate  speech, moral panic, stereotypes and myths. According to The Institute for Ethnic Studies the biggest social distance is experienced by Roma community, people with mental disorders, LGBT community.

Thus we organize a discussion between editors, society groups and experts about depiction of mentioned groups in the media.

There will an exhibition of headlines opened before the discussion which was initiated by Media4change. These are the real headlines from Lithuanian media outlets. They pay attention to the depiction of society groups in the media and maintains critical approach to it.
